I Play Riichi (Mahjong)
My name is Luke Morgan. I’m a professional riichi mahjong player – a member of Saikouisen Nihon Pro Mahjong Kyoukai, 49th term (“Saikouisen”). I’ve been playing Japanese Riichi Mahjong since 1997.
For over two decades, I have taught and coached players in the Western New York area at multiple mahjong clubs: RIT Nine Gates Mahjong, Hammergirl Anime Mahjong, and Casual Dragon Mahjong Club.
I run the news and information website Reach Mahjong of New York, the inter-club ranking and tournament tracker RiichiOut, and produce the Catfood Bowl and other tournaments for Yostar’s Mahjong Soul. I’ve judged and ran some of the largest and most prestigious mahjong tournaments in the western world, medaled and won at others, commentated and produced live and online events featuring the foremost players of our time, sit on the board of the American Riichi Association, and play a few hundred games a year in high-rate mahjong parlors in Tokyo while I’m there on business.
Unlike my other sites, this site is laser-focused on those who already know how to play into more competitive players, so that mahjong players in the western world can compete at the world’s highest levels. It contains training, strategy, and theory articles, links to other worthwhile content, and more specifically, information on passing the Pro Exam yourself.
I hope the content featured here makes the journey to becoming a stronger player, and even a pro, an easier one. If you would like more personal or one-on-one training, particularly for the Pro Exam, please contact me.
