Etiquette and Manners

Rather than put a comprehensive list, here are two SPM (Saikouisen Pro Mahjong) players’ etiquette video, including Kenji, one of the first Americans to pass the Pro Exam, and was also instrumental in opening the West up to the Pro organizations (yay Kenji!). Also included are videos showing discarding techniques to avoid fumbling tiles or improper reveals that lead to table delays.

In the interest of information presentation, if these videos are taken down, and you need to search for videos regarding these manners, helpful terms are: mahjong 麻雀 tile 牌 hand 上手 cut 切 technique 方 manners マナー .

Things to watch for

  • Was a tile discarded from draw or within the hand?
  • What tile was discarded immediately after a call?
  • Are you discarding in a way that does not cover the tile face for others unnecessarily? For example, is your hand as you pull it back blocking view of the tile from the left player.
  • Are you refraining from unnecessary noise and action? Clacking your tiles together, grumbling about bad draws, sucking on your teeth, humming, etc.
  • Are you speaking clearly and loudly enough for others to hear and understand?
